  5.     An American soldier of fortune named Jack Terrell, who once
  6. worked for the contra rebels in Nicaragua, created a political
  7. storm in the Philippines last week when he implicated Foreign
  8. Secretary Raul Manglapus in a bizarre plot to murder a handful
  9. of President Corazon Aquino's opponents, including rebel
  10. Colonel Gregorio ("Gringo") Honasan.

  12.     Aquino defended her Foreign Secretary as "an uncomplicated
  13. man" who would never contemplate murder. Manglapus, a droll
  14. diplomat who once set his thoughts on U.S.-Philippine relations
  15. to music in a theatrical comedy called Yanky Panky, denied the
  16. allegations.

  18.     But the drama will probably not be short-lived. Opposition
  19. Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who is running for President, called
  20. for a Senate investigation that could easily last until
  21. elections are held in May 1992.
